Pacific Agriculture Community - The clan ‘Vanuatabu’, Matalolo VIllage, in the upper Labasa Catchment shared the difficulties of getting sufficient coconuts for their families; and often travel far out to get good coconuts. Head of their clan Mosese Kaivei mentioned that a few Coconut trees surrounding their village was planted by their forefathers and now through the Fiji R2R project with the Fiji Forestry Department, they were able to plant 500 coconut trees.
In our region, Coconut tree plays a vital role in the livelihood of most or all communities and celebrating the World Coconut Day earlier this month, we are reminded of the importance of re-planting and particularly growing this tree, the tree of Life.
Mr Kaivei stressed the importance of re-planting trees, and in particular, the benefits it offers for their children and grandchildren. Matalolo village has planted around 9 hectares of both Native and Fruit trees.

‘Restoring Fiji’s Landscape’ is the focus of the component II & III of Fiji Ridge to Reef project, and is implemented by Pacific-Community-SPC 's Land Resources Division - Sustainable Forests' and Landscape team in partnership with the Fiji Department of Forest. Selected Catchments for this project is the Labasa, Tunuloa, Waidina and Ba Catchment.
